I first learned about Trim Healthy Mama – the book & lifestyle – from Kenj over at Orangerie. Then Trim Healthy Mama starting popping up all over the web…. in my blog feed and on Facebook. Hmm… it sounded interesting and a lot of people were getting great results in losing weight. But, I wasn’t really trying to lose weight (well, except about 5 pounds), so I sorta ignored all of the talk.
Then, I started seeing a few recipes from the book. The Muffin In A Mug, for example. It sounded yummy & used healthy ingredients. The more I heard about the THM plan/lifestyle, the more interested I was in buying the book. Finally, I decided to order it from Amazon, using gift cards I had earned through swagbucks. I got it about 3 months ago, when I was around 8 months pregnant. With the busyness of life, I put it on my nightstand and never even opened it.
Once baby was born, I started reading the book while feeding baby. And, I got excited! I felt like the authors (Pearl and Serene) took all of my thoughts and the research I’ve done on eating healthy and then amplified it by 100, organized it and backed it up with scientific proof, and put it in a book that makes complete sense! I had known how I wanted to eat, but I wasn’t able to put it into a workable plan/lifestyle.
For example, I’ve always felt there was a connection between blood sugar levels and mental health/hormones/etc. This book confirms that and explains WHY. It really is the answer I’ve been looking for. And, it’s about more than just eating… it’s about living healthy. This book talks about the Bible and food, the scientific research/proof behind how food affects our body, has tons of recipes using healthy ingredients, and also has a few chapters on hormones, exercise, and marriage. The best part? You don’t have to lose weight while eating the way they describe, because It’s not about losing weight… it’s about being healthy. Period. If that means losing weight to be healthy, then this book will show/tell you how to do that. If being healthy means you need to GAIN weight, this book is for you. If you need to maintain your weight, but need more energy, have gut issues, etc. this book will help you do that, too! It pretty much explains how to live/eat in order to be healthy, from the inside out.
I have been mostly sugar free since May 2012, when I was diagnosed with Sarcoidosis. It is an autoimmune disease (that had attacked my lungs) with no cure or FDA approved treatment. My only option, according to my doctor, was to take steroids and see if they helped. I opted out of that and decided to eat healthy and take supplements. I researched a lot, went to a natural doctor, and started my journey. Up until Olympas was born, I had rarely had refined sugar or processed foods since my diagnosis. (My Sarcoid symptoms have improved so drastically that my doctor said if she hadn’t already known my diagnosis, she would’ve never known I had it.) Since having baby, I slipped back into eating ice cream, some candy, and eating at drive-thrus once in awhile again (but, I still haven’t touched soda! It’s like a drug to me and I know if I give in to only “one soda”, I’ll end up craving more and it will be a downward spiral… yuck! I don’t even want it anymore!). I know how much better I feel when I avoid sugar and processed foods, but it can be hard to always want to cook at home or use stevia/honey/maple syrup in recipes that call for sugar and have them actually turn out tasting delicious!
I started the THM lifestyle on Sunday, June 23rd. I have been eating on the THM plan since then minus 2 days over the weekend where I still ate my S, E, & FP meals, but used less than healthy options. And I’m still trying to figure stevia out and have been using pure maple syrup & raw honey in moderation, which is not “on plan”. Stevia is their natural sweetener of choice, especially for people sensitive to blood sugar spikes or those needing to lose weight. I am hoping to find a pure stevia that tastes good. Right now I am trying to use up a bag of Stevia in the Raw, which has a filler and is not “on plan”. (BTW, they also talk about how to feed your kids healthy foods without making separate, special meals, etc… making this a whole-family-friendly lifestyle!). This book gives you a plan you can live with for the rest of your life. It gives you the knowledge you need, so that you can still go out to eat on occasion and make healthy choices that are still delicious! I’m pretty excited about it! I feel like this is how everyone should eat! (P.S. I have lost 4 pounds since starting the THM lifestyle without even “trying”!)
This is my own variation of a simple smoothie that I have been eating almost every day. I love it for breakfast or as a snack! It is 4 frozen strawberries, 1/2 cup 0% plain Greek yogurt, a splash of pure vanilla extract, and enough water or unsweetened almond milk to make it drinkable (about 1/4 cup or less). Add all to blender and blend! Yum! Add a sweetener of your choice, if you’d like, but I enjoy the slight tartness without. It is a FP, but using coconut milk to thin it, will make is an S meal. It makes about 8 oz.
I still haven’t finished the book (it’s a thick book and -so far- with a lot of good information!), but am slowly working my way through and trying new recipes. So far, my favorite recipe is the cake-in-a-mug/bowl. I’m looking forward to trying the cultured coconut milk (kefir), Chewy Sprouted Mini Loaves of bread, and the Earth Milk! I really think this will help my entire family (husband, too!) feel healthy… and -more importantly- be healthy! I plan to share my journey of learning this lifestyle with you over the next few months!
